Influence of Cultural Differences on Acting in Emergencies
Toni Bielić
Sažetak
Recognizing cultural predispositions is an important aspect of ship management. It can enable the ship's managing team to predict future actions or behaviour of a person. The occurrence of emergencies aboard ships reveals hidden and at first glance unnoticeable attitudes and actions of individual crew members which are based on different cultural backgrounds. This paper is an attempt to present general principles of acting in multicultural environments. These principles are based on recognizing essential characteristics of different cultures. Such characteristics are group and individual assessment and acting which are manifested in emergencies. Finally, general cultural guidelines are suggested as a guide to correct mutual understanding and acceptance as cultural basis for efficient acting in emergencies.
