Herman Dalmatinac (11/12th) Century): A Signpost to the Dim Origin of European Science (?)
Franjo Zenko
Sažetak
In the first part the paper considers the spiritual and intellectual context of research in the world and Croatia which identified the name of Herman Dalmatinac (Hermanus Dalmata), around the turn of the 19th century (A. Jourdain), and established the meaning of his work for constituting Latin Christianized Aristotelianism and Aristotelocentrism. The author sees the essential characteristic of that context in the crisis of identity of the European spirit, caused by Newton's new cosmological synthesis, the distrust in theologized metaphysics which has been radically undermined by Kant, and the French revolution. This crisis is expressed in philosophy by an interruption in the organic development of its tradition that is compensated in, e. g., the critical philological editions of Aristotle and historical philosophical reconstructions of Latin Aristotelianism.
Herman's translations are considered in the second part, especially the meaning of his translation of Abu Ma'shar's Introductorium based on Arisrotle, through which the -Latin Christian West in the 12th century first learned of Aristotle's natural philosophy (R. Lemay). The third part considers the earlier established meaning of De essentiis (Haskins, Lemay), with a special critical review of the thesis of Herman's Aristotlism without knowledge of Aristotle's libri naturales. In the last part there is a discussion of the true subject of De essentiis and Herman's method in that astrological tractate. The author sees the real subject of the tractate in the middle (medium) that is between the highest extreme (suprema extremitas - eight spheres) and the lowest (terminus infimus - earth). This middle, joining the totality of the universe (tota universitas) with the strength of its position in the middle, promotes the mixture of pure elements and forms the mixed (mixta). This is at the same time the subject of astrology which Herman meets as a new science whose subject he develop s and independently explores in De essentiis.
