Abstract

Burnout has been identified as a considerable problem in a number of ancillary professions, including the teaching profession. This paper presents the results of an initial research aimed at identifying and describing the level of burnout among adult teachers (andragogues) employed at adult education institutions. The sample consists of 165 respondents and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-NL-ES, Schaufeli, Daamen and Van Mierlo, 1994) was used to collect data. Research results showed the general burnout level to be low while indicating to a certain number of adult teachers who manifest the symptom of burnout in at least one of its three aspects: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement. Furthermore, the results showed that the respondents who feel greater emotional exhaustion at work also feel more depersonalized in their work with people. Personal achievement has not proven to be related to emotional exhaustion or depersonalization.
