The effect of apple eating and cdhewing gum on saliva pH

Sažetak

On 3 groups of 14 children (7 boys and 7 girls) 10 years old the effect on saliva pH of chewing an apple or a chewing gum with sugar or with a sugar substitute for approxim ately 10 minutes was investigated. The pH of the apple juice was 5,8. The pH of saliva samples was measured which were taken before and im m ediately after the apple or the gums were chewed and 30 and 60 minutes later. The apples produced only a m inor decrease of the pH — in boys from 6,79 to 6,69 and in girls from from 6,96 to £,76 — which after 1 hour returned to its baseline value. There was a somewhat greater decrease after the chewing of a gum w ith sugar — in boys from 7,07 to 6,73 and in girls from 6,97 to 6,5. Both after 1 hour had not yet quite reached baseline values. The chewing of gums w ith sugar substitutes produced an increase of the pH, in boys from 7,05 to 7,43 and in girls from 6,92 to 7,32.
