Sažetak
The author analyzes the rise of Ottoman interest for mapping of the eastern Adriatic coast, and studies the political context of the navigation atlas “Kitab-i Bahriye” (Book of Navigation). This book contains the earliest detailed and cartographic presentations our couast, including one map of the Sibenik archipelago. Composed in
1521 the Atlas is the work of the famous Ottoman cartographer Pîrî Reis, the admiral who personally participated in a series of naval battles along the Mediterranean. His maps of Eastern Adriatic coast were made on the basis of fi eld observations of sailors,
and far exceed the scope of the former Venetian cartography, which at that time still relied on Ptolemaic maps, and the Venetian Adriatic portolans which depicted it in a relatively small scale. The Pîrî Reis map of the Sibenik archipelago which is analyzed in this paper
illustrates this, as it exceeds contemporary Venetian maps in details. With each map Pîrî Reis has submitted a detailed description of the waters (the pilot), which is included in the first Croatian translation of the Piri Reis text presented in this paper.
