Abstract

The aim of this study was to define the relationship between personality traits, intelligence and school success. 178 pupils, aged 17 to 19, attending 3rd or 4th secondary school grades, participated in this research. To examine personality we used the Big Five Questionnaire. Intelligence was measured with the Domino 2000. As a criterion of school success we used average school grades, grades from “science” and “social” subjects groups. Correlation analysis showed that Conscientiousness including both sub-dimensions, Scrupulousness and Perseverance have a statistically significant relationship to school success. Regression analysis showed that personality traits and intelligence together explain 17.9% of variance of school success, for criterion grade average, where Conscientiousness has the most important role as personality predictor. These results indicate that certain traits from the Big Five Model can contribute to the explanation of school success.
