Sažetak

In Trogir, a small town whose old town is situated on a small island and the shelter is provided by Kaštela and Marina Bay and surrounding hills, people always lived from the sea. The inhabitants incidentally dealt with catching fish. The fish were caught with different types of nets, depending on the open season and when somebody caught fish with illegal equipment, the appropriate sentences were imposed in proclamations. People exclusively sold fresh fish and the rest was salted and dried. During the second half of the 18th century Venice still took its share of profit through taxes by forcing fishermen to go fishing even when they didn’t want. Obligations concerning fish, sales and fishing were regulated by the Statute of Trogir.
With regard to diet, we are quite familiar with the types of fish which were eaten in the house Garagnin due to cookery books and archival sources of the fund Garagnin-Fanfogna. Depending on the open season the family Garagnin had white and oily fish, very often cod, salted fish, shellfish and crabs, cephalopods etc. on their menu. The servants purchased fish in Garagnin’s house. The food was prepared in the attic, and it was eaten on the first floor of the palace. The population eat the fish of less quality which they caught. The fish was unquestionable on the menu of all strata of the Trogir society.
In conclusion, it may be said that the fishing and fish diet in Trogir in the late modern age had an appropriate role in the everyday life of all social strata, as they have it even today.
