Abstract

Leaves and stems of the Roman nettle (Urtica pilulifera) were frozen, macerated in a blendor in 80% methanol at 5°C, and the plant material repeatedly extracted with methanol for 22 hrs at +2 °C. The separation of the basic compounds was achieved on a Amberlite CG-50 column. The identification of 5-hydroxytryptamine was based on Rf-values (compared to those of an authentic sample of 5-hydroxytryptamine), colour reactions with several reagents and fluorescence characteristics. The amount found was 0.4 p,g/g of fresh weight. Histochemical investigations with p-dimethylamino-cinnamaldehyde indicate that 5-hydroxytryptamine is located mainly in the stings.
