Abstract
The irrigation of permanent crops (fruits and vines) should in Croatia be mandatory due to frequent droughts that occur during the summer period, vary in length, and often have severe consequences that result in poor yields and lower crop quality. The deficiency of precipitation during vegetation affects the growth of leaves, the flowering, ripening and dropping of fruit, the formation of flower embryos, the senescence and shedding of leaves, photosynthesis, the accumulation of nutrients and overwintering. Agrotechnical measures such as irrigation provide the supply of water to the plant in the amount required for normal growth and development. The efficiency of irrigation systems is especially evident in vegetation periods subject to drought conditions when the amount of rainfall usually does not meet the water requirements of plants. The selection of the appropriate irrigation system will depend on the variety of crop that is grown and physical properties of soil. It is almost inconceivable to maintain a stable and high-quality fruit or grape production without implementing an irrigation system. Moreover, according to some studies, a proper irrigation system can not only increase due yield by up to 50 % but raise the quality of produced fruit and therefore inevitably result in a better and safer placement of such fruit on the market.
