Sažetak
Intensive work on development of maize hybrids from inbred lines in Bc Institute was started in 1947 and this early work resulted in development of the first inbred line Bc 3 and the first maize hybrid, Bc 590, registered in Croatia in 1962. The replacement of the local varieties by improved hybrids appreciably increased maize yields. Apart from the genotype, an important role in grain yield increase was played by cultural practices, primarily fertilizer application, crop protection and stand density.
The aim of this work was to test agronomic properties of new Bc hybrids Bc 462B, Bc418B, Pajdaš, and Bc 572. In yield trials at four locations, new Bc hybrids produced yields that were higher than the trial mean. Special mention should be made of Bc 418B which was superior in yield to the standard Bc 4982. In addition, this hybrid excells in stalk rot resistance and stay-green quality of the leaves and is suited to intensive grain and silage production. Hybrid Bc 572 produced the highest yield at 65000 plants/ha and can be recommended for production in lower plant densities. Pajdaš and Bc 462B in particular produced the highest yields at 80000 plants/ha, which was statistically significant. In addition to high grain quality, it is suited to high plant densities.
