Abstract

Due to its geographical position and diverse climate, soil, and topography, Republic of Croatia has an equally diverse and extremely rich medicinal flora, which has not been fully investigated and utilised, except in folk medicine. Some studies of medicinal and related flora in Croatia, that have been recorded, indicate many plant species containing coumarin, furocoumarin, and their derivatives. Well-known antibrucellous property of umbelliferone has focused even greater attention on coumarin derivatives containing flora. It is striking to find in a relatively small area like Croatia such a large number of plants abounding in those important active constituents. This article is an attempt to point out a wealth of plants containing coumarin and furocoumarin derivatives that can be found in Croatia. The main aim of this article has been to develop methods for a planned and rational use of these plants within scientific, Croatian Bank of Plant Genes, in order to cover domestic demands, to offer them to foreign markets, and also to cultivate these plants for the preparation of adequate amount of quality products.
