Sažetak
Breeding of winter wheat in the Zagreb Bc Instiute for Breeding and Production of Field Crops has been performed in several directions. The first and important one was aimed at changing the model of a wheat variety to the one in which the yield was based on higher plant density, i.e. about 600-700 semi-dwarf plants/m². The next one had the obiective to preserve the achieved high yielding potential of varieties in the type of Zlatna Dolina by incoporating genetic resistance to economically the most important fungal diseases (stem rust, powdery mildew, Septoria blotch, and fusarium head blight). Higher yielding potential through yield components was achieved by increasing 1000-kernel weight and by increasing number throught increased number of spikelets per spike, higher fertility and also by using Rm, Ts and Nr genes form hexaploid wheat. Another objective was to improve plant statue by developing parallel sided spikes to get better uniformity of kernel size and to improve photosynthesis by selecting spikes with lax density of spikelets. Also another means to achieve improved yield potential was through slight increase inplant heigh and lasting leaf area duration (LAD) as genetic trait it self and through higher resistance to diseases reducing green area of a plant. The latest program is focused on breeding durum wheat.
