Lidija Brtan
; Zagreb
Sažetak
The article discusses hybrid novels, also known as mash-up novels, as a relatively new form of contemporary postmodern intertextuality which combines highbrow and lowbrow culture. The inquiry considers the possible motives behind writing such works, the process of their creation, and the attempt to provide a consistent definition for the literature in question, as well as describing its different sub-types. It is demonstrated that the roots of this literary phenomenon originate in popular culture and the contemporary entertainment industry, but also claim its predecessors in the tradition of postmodernist textuality. As an example of this new form of literature, the hybrid novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith is taken up for analysis.
