Abstract

Postmodern tolerance and disputing any canon lead to losing a distinction between high quality and poor quality literature which existed in the past. Thus emerges a paradox in which either tradition or contemporary literature can be equally determined as entirely good or entirely bad. If value judgements in this matter are left to literary theories, taste no longer has the role it used to have in the entire history of European literature. Immenseness of information and tendency towards playing with an already existing elements taken from tradition, without critical judgements, leads to the condition in which taste is replaced by fashion and literature loses any kind of relation to the future. Therefore it seems important to reconsider an almost forgotten notion of taste at the most general level.
