Abstract

Seed dormancy is an innate seed property that enables the seeds of many species to remain quiescent until conditions become favorable for germination. A dormant seed does not have the capacity to germinate in a specified period of time under any combination of normal physical environmental factors that are otherwise favorable for its germination, i.e. after the seed becomes non-dormant. Dormancy is an adaptative mechanism which affects both seed germination and subsequent seedling growth. It is very important for many temperate fruit trees because dormancy protect fruit trees seeds from freeze damage during the winter. In this short review we present a view across recent literature data of the seed dormancy with additional attention to the fruit tree seed dormancy.
