Large Displacement Effects on Stone Masonry Structure: a Practical Solution

Sažetak

Stone masonry structures are exceptionally rigid. Their failure is manifested as local brittle fracture, but mostly it will impact the overall structure. In the event of extremely small relative displacements extremely large stresses can occur, known as stress concentration in the local (usually along the edges) contact area of two stone blocks. Subject of this work is the analysis and research of causes and factors of the occurrence of such stress concentration from different aspects, with proposed method of their elimination.
The results of the research and their practical implementation are illustrated on one exceptionally valuable object of our historical and cultural construction heritage.
Today and with the aid of modern tools and materials, available calculation and measurement technologies, we are able to establish and assess the real causes of such damages. Based on such found results plans can be produced for successful and mostly permanent rehabilitation and remedy of damages on stone masonry structures. The first step for a successful rehabilitation is to familiarize with the initial ideas and intentions of the original builder of such structure. Once this is achieved, proper assessment of the existing state of the object will enable a proper, successful and permanent rehabilitation.
The method of elimination and rehabilitation of the cause of damages to stone masonry structures is presented in the example of the Rector’s Palace in Dubrovnik. The concept of anticipated behavior of the structure by the original builder has been fully respected. A research (as much as was possible) of the state and condition of this building over the past three centuries was conducted, whereas the current state has been analyzed in detail.
Sophisticated numerical analysis has been applied to simulate the behavior of the structure under different conditions and loads. Foundation failure under the load bearing columns in the ground floor, as result of uneven settling of the building has also been simulated. A simulation of the displacement of the supports in the upper floor under seismic loads on the building that result in major displacements on load bearing elements of the atrium’s facade has also been performed. Modern materials were used, but all under strict compliance with the requirements set forth by the Heritage Conservation Office. Through every phase of the rehabilitation process continuous supervision and control measurements were conducted.
We believe that the rehabilitated structure of the atrium facade will last for several centuries under normal conditions and proper management and maintenance.
