Vladimir Becić, War Correspondent
Zvonko Maković
; full professor in retirement, Zagreb, Croatia
Abstract
When the First World War broke out in the summer of 1914, Vladimir Becić voluntarily joined the Serbian army. In the spring next year, he was appointed as a war painter with the Command of the First Šumadija division. Taking part in the massive and dramatic withdrawal of the army and civilians from Smederevo and Kraljevo, through Priština and Prizren, Montenegro and Albania to the Adriatic coast, Becić photographed events he witnessed, thus creating a unique series of documentary photographs, but also illustrations that would be published a year later in the mass-circulation Paris semimonthly L'Illustration, which made him a regular correspondent.
