Sažetak
Animal welfare includes physical and mental health of animals and requires fulfilling the basic welfare standard described through the Concept of Five Freedoms. Welfare of animals is ensured if the animal is healthy, has comfortable accommodation, is properly fed and nurtured, has the ability to behave inherent in its species and does not suffer from unpleasant conditions such as pain, fear, and stress. The development of intensive breeding systems based on intensive selection of pigs for desirable traits and new technologies have called into question animal welfare in all aspects of pig production, from breeding and transportation to slaughter. The aim of the paper was to describe the impact of intensive selection on the welfare of pigs and positive and negative aspects when selected on traits such as lean meat content, growth rate, and litter size. Also, the aim of the work was to describe the traits included in breeding programs with the aim of improving the welfare of pigs and the effectiveness of production.
