Prosodic pattern for expressing something incomprehensible in German

Abstract

This article primarily presents the results of a study of utterances with a set of features: wavy intonation curve and relatively slow speech in spoken German language. In addition, the article problematizes contemporary trends within the study of prosody and the teaching of prosody of foreign languages. The display of previous research on prosody also finds its place in the article in the context of the scheme of opposition to one’s own expectation, and the scheme that borders on these schemes in the spoken German language. The research is based on the analysis of 30 utterances with a wavy intonation curve and relatively low speech speed and the analysis of everything said before and after them that refers to them in any way or that forms a larger conversational structure with them. The research showed that utterances with the research set of characteristics express past events, i.e. past or present states that the speaker considers incomprehensible.
