After a brief explanation of the concept of identical twins, the most significant methods of criminal identification are described. First, personal description methods based on observation are outlined and afterwards, the methods of human identification using polymorphic genetic characteristics. In addition to the identification by DNA analysis, dactyloscopy is the most widespread and reliable forensic identification method. Furthermore, handwriting and signature analysis methods are detailed, followed by identification based on facial features, thermograms of the face and body, retina and iris structure and forensic odontology. Identical twins as criminal offenders can be differentiated by applying dactyloscopy, handwriting and signature analysis, thermograms of the face and body, by the characteristics of the retina and iris, as well as by applying forensic odontology methods. Of all the described human identification methods, personal description, facial features and DNA phenotyping are less effective in distinguishing between identical twins.
