The Inner Zone of Pula's Porta Gemina Complex - Investigation, Preservation, and Interventions

Sažetak
The Porta Gemina (“Double Gate”) in Pula is one of only
two surviving antique period entrances to the city. Over the
past several centuries, however, this important and unique gate
complex has not been presented or appreciated in its original
form. The Porta Gemina once comprised a monumental covered
entrance complex enclosed by walls forming a trapezoidal zone
narrowing towards the city and ending at a smaller gate. Only
the lateral pilasters of this second gate now survive, almost entirely
destroyed in the past. This paper aims to present the history
of their discovery and events associated with these pilasters, in
particular during the 19th c., their state of preservation, and
the conservation and restoration interventions that have finally
restored their monumental dignity.
