Abstract

State aid means granting government funds aimed at growth, development, and strengthening competitiveness of economic entities on the global market. State aid policy in the Republic of Croatia is implemented on the basis of predetermined guidelines, within the legal framework at the European Union level. The subject of this paper is to determine the effects of state aids on GDP and employment in the Republic of Croatia. By using a simple regression analysis and correlation between amounts of granted sector-based state aids and horizontal state aids, the significance of state aids for a European Union member state is proven, along with the necessity of investing in horizontal objectives and minimising sector-based (so-called vertical) state aids.
