Abstract

The paper gives a linguistic and linguo-stylistic analysis of contemporary Croatian poetry based on a selected corpus of Croatian poetry collections published in the last thirty years. It relies on theoretical conceptions of poetry and poetic language. The paper approaches poetic language as an autonomous and authentic system that reexamines, expands and rethinks "ordinary" language at different levels and develops its own logic and grammaticality so as to create and represent distinctive artistic worlds. Within the framework of our analysis eight selected segments of contemporary poetic texts are singled out, explained and exemplified; this includes the specific use of punctuation marks, adaptation of loanwords, multi-level polyphony, mechanisms of replacing one expression with another according to a certain principle (use of metaphor and similar phenomena), poetry syntax, intertextuality, neologisms and thematization of language as a building material of poetry. The paper focuses not only on the poetic expression, but also on the content level, i.e. the poetic reflection on words, speech and language, their nature and boundaries. In addition to the linguistic-philosophical theses presented earlier, the paper discusses the communicative qualities of poetry as well as the structure and complexity of the (modern) poetic code.
