Sažetak
In this essay, I explore the evolution of historian of ideas Paolo Rossi’s (1923–2012) views and polemical stances toward various twentieth-century antimodern, irrationalist, and primitivist cultural currents, situating them within his broader intellectual journey. I examine how these positions connect to his studies on the interplay between magic and science, as well as magic and modernity; his engagement with Marxism; his responses to the countercultural movements of the 1960s and 1970s; and his intellectual debts and departures from mentors and influences such as Eugenio Garin, Antonio Banfi, Ernesto de Martino, and Frances A. Yates. This exploration reveals a process of deepening, re-evaluation, and “dramatization” of the notion of magic, alongside Rossi’s growing conviction of the need to continually renew the commitment to rationality and science established at the dawn of modernity, and his mounting concern over cultural and political trends that seem to diverge from this path.
