Abstract
This presentation aims at giving an overview of the research concerning the hilltop site of Thunau am Kamp. It is unique in the region of Lower Austria with regard to its extensive archeological investigation. In Carolingean times this large-scale fortified complex comprised a centrally situated homestead (Herrenhof) including a large cemetery, ramparts, gates etc. The research history in terms of excavations as well as analyses will be briefly reviewed, while the focus will be on latest research: This regards on one hand the centre of power on the Schanzberg and on the other hand an associated production-oriented settlement in the valley at the foot of the Schanzberg, comprising archaeological research as well as
natural sciences and prospection approaches.
