Ranko Starac
Abstract
The cleaning of the surroundings of the chapel on the islet of St. Marin (in the Middle Ages known as Čaplen) opposite the Late Antique fortress of Lopar in Novi Vinodolski was led and supervised by the author of this article, along with the participation of descendants of Croatian emigrants as part of the Croatian registry of emigrants the Eco Heritage Task Force. The remains of the perimeter walls of an older sacral building were cleared on which stands the existing 17th century chapel. The older chapel had a semicircular apse and somewhat larger in dimension, the total length with the apse is 9.5m, with an external width of 4.9m. The new chapel with its peripheral walls lies along the inner face of the older chapel. Fragments of ancient roof tiles were found, Antique and Late Antique ceramics, and in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb a fragment of a marble slab from the 4th century with a dedication to Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, which was found near the end of the 19th century, is kept safe. In the future answers to the questions about the continuity of the religious function on St. Marin should be sought in respect to its position towards the fortress of Lopar.
