Abstract

We discuss the conditions for the existence of spherically symmetric chiral soliton. We show that the system has a nontrivial minimum that corresponds to a rotating chiral soliton even after the collective-coordinate quantization has been performed. However, the stability of the soliton corresponds to a question of finitness of the moments of inertia of collective coordinate modes. In the case of the chiral soliton of the Skyrme model the rotational moment of inertia is divergent but the characteristic rotational time is much longer than the characteristic radiation time therefore permitting the semiclassical approximation in which the soliton is treated as a rotating classical body.
