Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the trend in soybean seed testing between 2019 and 2024, with a specific focus on the detection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Monitoring was carried out in accordance with national legislation, which mandates zero tolerance for GMOs in seed material. Seed samples were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), enabling the detection of characteristic genetically modified sequences: P-35S, t-NOS, CTP2-CP4-EPSPS, Cry1Ab/Ac, and PAT. DNA extraction was performed using the CTAB method, and DNA quality was confirmed spectrophotometrically. The results indicate a steady increase in the number of samples analyzed over the six-year period, from 519 samples in 2019 (12.72% of the total) to 1,327 samples in 2024 (32.52%). The cumulative frequency shows a gradual accumulation of samples over the years, with a total of 4,081 samples analyzed by the end of 2024. This growth reflects an expanded scope of analysis and consistent implementation of the monitoring program. No genetically modified sequences were detected in any of the samples. These findings confirm the effectiveness of the monitoring system in preventing the presence of GMOs in seed material and contribute to the preservation of genetic purity and the safety of agricultural production in the Republic of Croatia.
