Sažetak
The paper examines the motives and implications of registering the Kajkavian dialect as a separate historical literary language by SIL International. The author first considers changes in classification in the historical context of Croatian-Slovenian linguistic relations, then problematizes criteria for distinguishing between languages and dialects, and analyzes the consequences of attempting to emancipate Kajkavian from the Croatian language through an identity perspective. The author argues that language is always a product of society, and since there is no apolitical society, which is even more pronounced for state and international institutions, political motives are inherent in all institutional linguistic projects, including the registration of Kajkavian as a separate historical language by SIL International. The author concludes that the undeniable similarity of the Kajkavian dialect and certain dialects of the Slovenian language, but claims that Kajkavian is more similar to Slovenian than Croatian, can be interpreted in the context of comparing the Slovenian and Croatian standard languages, not the entire Croatian language. As argued in this paper, Kajkavian is part of the Croatian language, as confirmed by the current identity markers of Kajkavians and the fact that Kajkavians have been and remain bearers of Croatian national thought for centuries.
