Sažetak
The paper compares the language of two editions of Kristijanović's Book of Tobias, from Danica zagrebečka (Zagreb Danica, 1845) and from Žitek sveteh mučenikov II. (The Life of the Holy Martyrs II, 1871). The aim of the paper was to determine the differences between the two editions at the alphabetical and orthographic, phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical levels, so that we can determine whether and in what way Kajkavian Literary Language has changed over the course of a quarter of a century, using the same text. The research has identified differences between the two editions on all levels. An insight into the alphabet shows that in the later version of the text, Kristijanović really tried to adhere to Gaj's alphabet as consistently as possible. At the level of phonology, the text from Žitek has a smaller number of attestations of the palatal rj and the permutations of the initial group of phonemes vs-, which brings it closer to Štokavian, and we interpret the fewer examples of palatalization as Kristijanović's turning to Zagreb speech as one of the bases of the Kajkavian Literary Language. At the morphological level, we find single attestations of case endings for the locative singular feminine gender, adjectival declensions of non-palatal stems, and genitive and locative cardinal numbers from three onwards, common with endings for the Štokavian language. On the other hand, in this text we note several confirmations of the longer forms of the third person plural, in accordance with the typical Kajkavian Literary Language equating of the number of syllables of the third person plural with the first and second person of those verbs whose present tense stem ends in -e or -i. Features of the syntactic level: one example of moving the verb to the end of the sentence, several confirmations of the approximation of parts of complex verb tenses, several changes of aspect of the verb, and two changes of verb tenses ‒ all of these are Kristijanović's stylistic and translational choices. Lexical differences mainly concern noun and verb synonyms. Noun synonyms in the younger text can be explained to some extent by facilitating understanding for the Štokavian reader, as can some verb synonyms, although we also find an example that is more in the spirit of Kajkavian Literary Language. Some noun variants have quite different meanings, which calls into question the accuracy of Kristijanović's translations. Finally, it is obvious that with the spelling of the younger version of the text, Kristijanović moved towards Štokavization, and on other linguistic levels, except for the syntactic one, he occasionally opted for forms common to Štokavian, along with a few »more Kajkavian« features of the younger text.
