Sažetak

This work refers to certain similarities in the understanding and practice of language and script between Croatian Protestants of the 16th century and Croatian Glagolism of the 17th century. As a component of this debate, in terms of the vernacular language, the affirmation of the Ikavian-(Neo-)Štokavian idiom was particularly often advocated (F. Glavinić, I. T. Mrnavić, R. Levaković, and others), but other Croatian literary language options (especially the Hybrid type) were also considered. The Church Slavonic position was not neglected either, which is ultimately confirmed by the language of the published Glagolitic Missal (1631) prepared by Rafael Levaković. Regarding the liturgical script, all three Slavic script options were considered: primarily Glagolitic, and then Cyrillic and/or Latin script. The interpretation is applied to historical sources containing lesser-known names and literary language ideas of the 17th century, with special emphasis on the edition of fifty letters related to the publication of Glagolitic liturgical books, written between 1620 and 1648, which were prepared and published in Academy series Starine (Antiquities) in 1891 by Euzebije Fermendžin (Listovi o izdanju glagolskih crkvenih knjiga i o drugih književnih poslovih u Hrvatskoj od god. 1620. – 1648. – Letters on the publication of Glagolitic liturgical books and other literary works in Croatia from 1620 to 1648). The letters were translated from Italian and interpreted by focusing on Glavinić’s and Levaković’s activities and their understanding of liturgical language and script, which is important for understanding Croatian Glagolism of the 17th century.
