Sažetak
In the first part of the article, the author examines the circumstances surrounding the commission of a marble relief depicting the deceased Saint Anastasia on a bier, dated to the second quarter of the 15th century. In an effort to determine the reason for this unusual iconographic choice, the relief is primarily contextualized within a series of archiepiscopal commissions for the furnishing of the cathedral sanctuary during the early decades of the re-established Venetian rule over Zadar. Its model is identified in the stone sarcophagus of the most venerated relic in Zadar, that of Saint Simeon, which housed the relic until 1632. Subsequently, by analyzing data from primary and secondary sources, the article explores the possible original placement of the marble relief in relation to the altar where the relics of Saint Anastasia were kept, deposited in a stone sarcophagus commissioned by Bishop Donatus in the early 9th century. The second part of the article critically analyzes significant attributions of the relief, with particular attention to scholars who have identified the hand of Francesco Laurana, considering it an early work from his youth before he departed for Italy and Provence, where he spent his entire career. Although this attribution has often been contested, it is not devoid of artistic arguments, the value of which is assessed and contextualized. Finally, the article evaluates the attribution to the Lombard late Gothic sculptor Jacopino da Tradate, which, following its publication, was accepted on several occasions but without a more detailed analysis. The article concludes with a comparative examination of the stylistic and morphological details of the Zadar relief and several of Jacopino’s Milanese works, ultimately supporting this attribution. This conclusion provides several guidelines for future research, which should be expanded to include the circumstances surrounding the import of this unique sculptural piece.
