Sažetak

Croatology has emerged as a distinct interdisciplinary academic field, formally recognized within the Croatian scientific framework in 2009. T his study examines the historical development of Croatology, emphasizing its evolution under the influence of key cultural, historical, and political factors, beginning in the 19th century. It critically analyzes methodological approaches central to Croatological research, such as linguistic, literary, and cultural studies, and explores their integration into contemporary academic discourse. Furthermore, the paper investigates the public perception of Croatology and its distinction from related f ields, such as Croatistics, highlighting ongoing debates about its academic and societal relevance. Institutional advancements, including the establishment of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, have contributed significantly to its academic credibility. However, challenges remain in consolidating its identity and addressing professional opportunities for its graduates. This research highlights the need for refining methodological frameworks and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to further enhance the impact of this field on the understanding of Croatian national identity and culture.
