Tamara Krešić
Sažetak
The devastating earthquake that hit the area of Sisak-Moslavina County on December 29, 2020, specifically the town of Petrinja, left enormous consequences for the infrastructure, economy, property and people’s lives. The goals of the research were to understand the challenges that Petrinja is faced with in the process of post-earthquake renewal and revitalization, and to see in to how citizens perceive these processes. Analysis of interviews with citizens (N = 12) provided insight into the limited participation of experts and citizens in the processes of renewal and revitalization. In addition, lack of expertise, poor prioritization, lack of communication and poor flow of information, inefficient use of finances and resources as well as failure to achieve short-term goals, are obstacles to a successful renewal. The main conclusions indicate that for successful revitalization it is necessary to create jobs for highly educated young people and invest efforts in the reconstruction of the city center as a key factor of social revitalization. This paper represents the first research in this area after the earthquake and provides recommendations to decision makers for the successful design of renewal programs that meet the real needs of the citizens of Petrinja.
