Intimate partner violence: a research review of risk factors, consequences and prevention programmes

Intimate partner violence is any violent and coercive behavior between two romantic partners. This research review aimed to unify the results of the studies on intimate partner violence published between 1995 and 2023. The aim was a comparison of findings from both local and global research, with the purpose of contributing to fighting against intimate partner violence. The review included adolescent, heterosexual, and LGBT partnerships. Results suggest that the risk factors for experiencing intimate partner violence are similar across different types of intimate relationships (e.g., adverse family dynamics, lower socioeconomic status, gender norms that promote domination of one gender over another, etc.). These findings are similar across the globe. Regarding LGBT relationships, there appear to be specific risk factors (e.g., internalized homophobia and homophobic control). The consequences of intimate partner violence can be both physical (e.g., illnesses, injuries, fetus anomalies, etc.) and psychological (e.g., fear, shame, depression, anxiety, helplessness, etc.). This review presents existing prevention programs for intimate partner violence and suggests that the most successful programs are those that include active community work. The review concludes that more attention should be given to creating sources of support for LGBT victims, as well as male ones.
