Trees as people and poets in the poems of Hungarian poet Lőrinc Szabó

Abstract
Lőrinc Szabó is a classic figure of modern Hungarian lyric poetry. Many of his poems explore existential questions of life and death, themes that have persisted in his poetry in the last thirty years. In this paper we will examine poems that, by projecting the life and fate of plants – primarily trees – on humans, reflect on human life and destiny through their existence and fate. Across numerous poems, regardless of the period to which they belong, a process of realization emerges: from the similarity to the identity of trees and humans, then of trees and the poet, and ultimately of the tree’s flower and the poet’s poetry. The concept of destiny is used in the sense of an inevitable course in human life or in the unfolding of events.
