Sažetak

This research aimed to analyze the substitutions of the target segments in Croatian elicited by tongue twisters. The purpose of the analysis was to verify some of the basic findings (claims) derived from speech error research, which say that substitutions between two segments are more frequent if: (1) they share the same syllable position than if they do not; (2) they are in initial position in the word and (3) they are phonetically or phonologically similar. The research included 24 female participants. The stimulus consisted of tongue twisters composed of four monosyllabic Croatian words with two target segments (TS). Target
segments occupied one of three possible positions within the tongue twister: both target segments were attached to the onset of the syllable, both were attached to the coda, or one TS was attached to the onset, and the other one to the coda. Target segments differed from each other in one, two, or three phonetic features. Target segments also came in ABAB or BAAB order within words. Participants had to repeat the tongue twisters while they were written on the screen, and then from memory. The rate of reciting the stimulus was set by a metronome. The results confirmed claims (1) and (3), but claim (2) was not confirmed in this
speech corpus. It has also been shown that segments that differ in the manner of articulation are more prone to mutual substitutions than segments that differ in the place of articulation or voicing. The results are interpreted within the models of phonological encoding during the process of speech production.
