Preventive activities of community nurses of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Health Center

Abstract

Introduction: Community health nurses play a crucial role in implementing health education and disease prevention initiatives within the community. They employ various approaches, including individual work, education in small and large groups, and workshops, to provide information on the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases.
Aim: This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and ways in which preventive activities are implemented in the community health service of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Health Center. The specific objectives are to determine the types of preventive activities that are implemented and activities that could contribute to better motivation for responding to preventive examinations.
Methods: The study was conducted in February 2024 using a questionnaire that was created for the needs of this study by the author.
Results: 64 community health nurses work in the community health service of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Health Center. The most common goal of their preventive actions was to motivate individuals to persist in positive activities (35.1%). Preventive activities are most often implemented individually (57.9%). 96.5% of them believe that their activities have an effect. 42.1% of the respondents believe that preventive activities should be organized differently. Of the National preventive programs, motivation for breast cancer was most often implemented (93%), while motivation for colon cancer was implemented by 7% of the respondents. 87.7% of them believe that they have a sufficient level of knowledge to implement preventive activities, while 14.0% of the respondents believe that they do not have a sufficient level of knowledge. On the knowledge test, 83.16% of the community nurses had 100% correct answers. 84.2% of the community nurses believe that installing a health application that promotes preventive activities on smartphones would increase the response to preventive examinations.
Conclusion: Community nurses of the Health Center of the County of Primorje-Gorski Kotar have a high level of knowledge about preventive activities.
