Abstract
Addictions have existed since the beginning of humanity, but in the past few decades a new addictions have emerged, in accordance to social conditions and life style in modern society. The main characteristic of modern addictions is that they appear early, in childhood and adolescence, and are often associated with other addictions. The results of previous research show that modern addictions are just as dangerous to an individual's health as those that can be grouped under the common term "traditional addictions" such as drug or alcohol addiction. A particular problem is the social perception of modern addictions, which are still not recognized as a public health problem, even though they are characterized by interfering with an individual's daily functioning, and neglecting or completely destroying social relationships, i.e. relationships with the immediate environment. These characteristics are especially problematic when it comes to children and adolescents, and it seems that this problem is left to the family, instead of designing quality interventions and prevention of these types of addictions. The paper will provide a brief overview of contemporary addictions to caffeine-based energy drinks, and gaming addiction - two addictions that are gradually gaining public attention, but still not to the extent that they should be.
