Abstract

The paper discusses the myth of the creation of the world and the gods in Greek mythology. The creation of the world, known as cosmogony, derives from the Greek words kosmos (order) and genesis (birth). The ancient Greeks observed the world around them and sought to explain various natural phenomena that were incomprehensible to people in the pre-scientific era and beyond rational understanding. According to the most well-known Greek myth, the world emerged from Chaos—a formless, shapeless mass from which the first gods were born. Chaos itself was also considered a deity. The origin of the gods is known as theogony, a term made famous by Hesiod, one of Greece’s most prominent poets, whose work has preserved many Greek myths to this day.
