Abstract

Students are often perceived as a potential political elite, possessing a high level of education and understanding of their rights and democratic processes. Higher education provides an ideal environment and favorable preconditions for assuming political responsibility and internalizing democratic processes. Highly educated people, former students, frequently occupy high political positions, therefore, their political competences acquired at university can and must be upgraded and developed. To assess the extent of students’ familiarity with the decision-making processes at their faculties, that is, at the university, a survey was conducted among students at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Teacher Education. The aim was to analyze and determine students’ knowledge about the composition and activities of the Student Union, their representative body, and basic political literacy about the functioning of a democratic state. The results showed that the students of the Faculty of Teacher Education are not sufficiently prepared for optimal participation in democratic processes at the faculty.
