Sažetak

The construction remains of the old Cathedral of St. Peter are located in the northern half of the courtyard of today’s Archbishop’s Palace in Đakovo. Archaeological excavations conducted by the Regional Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments and the Osijek Archaeological Museum in 1992, 2018, 2019 and 2022 have provided new insights into the cathedral’s architectural layering.
The cathedral’s construction is associated with the relocation of the seat of the Bosnian Diocese to Đakovo in the mid-13th century. Based on masonry techniques, floor plan characteristics and the features of the found medieval stone architectural sculptures, it can be assumed that the medieval cathedral was built in three phases, ultimately acquiring its final form. During the first phase, probably around the year 1300, a smaller sacral building was built (a singlenave church with an elongated rectangular sanctuary), which was then extended westward by adding a nave and vaulting in the 15th century. The final phase involved the addition of a bell tower, projecting as a risalite from the western facade, and the extension of the sanctuary on the eastern side with a narrower, polygonal end in the second half of the 15th century or early 16th century. Based on its relatively good level of preservation, it is believed that the sanctuary area may have been adapted into a “sacred fortress mosque”, as referenced in historical records of the Đakovo fortress during the Ottoman occupation of Đakovo. Following the liberation of Slavonia, a series of architectural interventions during the 18th century led to the transformation and restoration of the medieval cathedral in the Baroque style. In the autumn of 1880, the cathedral was closed due to structural damage, and by the end of the same year, it was decided that it would be removed due to the impossibility of further use.
In collaboration with the Archdiocese of Đakovo–Osijek, the discovered floor plan remains of the old Cathedral of St. Peter will be showcased on the ground floor as part of the upcoming renovation of the inner garden of the Archbishop’s Palace.
