The Contemporary Time and the Paneuropean Idea of Coudenhove-Kalergi (Summary)

Abstract
In 1923, the Pan-European manifesto written by Count Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi was published. In it’s 11 chapters, the reasons why Europe should unite were explained, and in the interwar period it represented one of the more developed ideas of unification. This is supported by the fact that some of the more influential politicians were also part of the movement. Many authors have written about this work, and when talking about European integration in the interwar period, the ideas expressed in the manifesto are almost unavoidable. The idea of European unification has a long history that, at least recently, has only begun to be explored. As the idea of Coudenhove is still important for the European Union, which can be seen from the placement of the manifesto on the Parliament’s website in 100 books, the time has come to reexamine his ideas that are more than 100 years old. The paper will talk about the ideas that Coudenhove put forward in the manifesto, where his ideas will first be placed in a historical context, something more will be said about other ideas of the unification of Europe at that time, and then the views of the manifesto will be reviewed in today’s literature. Ultimately, the most important ideas from the manifesto will be analyzed through today’s events, in order to see the relevance of the ideas presented through a modern perspective.
