Abstract

At the end of the 19th century, in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the demands for state reform on the political, social and economic levels became louder and louder. That struggle was led by the Czechs, who most often set the course. Croats saw them as a role model and followed them. They were aware that the Monarchy would not respect the main demand - solving the National Question. It was necessary to go gradually – taking “small steps” to a big change. The person who conveyed great ideas to the Croatian youth, that continued their studies in Prague after the incident on the Ban Jelačić Square in 1895, was a world-renowned professor – Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. He introduced them to the ideas of Slavic reciprocity, political realism and natural law. He promoted the socialization of lower social classes, the need of education for wider social classes, economic and cultural progress. The youth that listened Masaryk’s lectures were also in contact with Stjepan Radić, who was studying in Paris. They decided to start a magazine called Hrvatska misao, through which they would introduce their compatriots to Masaryk’s ideas.
