Sažetak
Changes, both on the local and on the global level, no longer represent exceptions or surprises, but rather a constant reality. In the wake of these continuous changes, important traditional and value-based foundations have been profoundly shaken. Religion (faith), culture, and society are deeply interwoven and mutually dependent. Faith relies on culture, for it cannot be expressed apart from cultural forms. Moreover, the very notion of faith without cultural manifestation is inconceivable. Yet in many areas of life, faith and culture no longer progress in the same direction. Their divergence has been long in the making. Pope Paul VI already recognized the consequences of this rift when he observed: “The split between the Gospel and culture is without a doubt the drama of our time, just as it was of other times”. Hence, it is an enduring imperative for the Church to enter into dialogue with culture and to evangelise it. This task is more urgent today than ever before. The aim of this paper was to analyse relevant literature and authors who systematically explore changes in contemporary culture and their consequences for religion, religiosity, and religious socialisation, particularly among younger generations. Both Croatian and international studies and papers were reviewed. The analysis revealed that we live in a world of epochal change that affects every dimension of human life, including religion (faith), religiosity, spirituality, and attitudes towards religious institutions (in our case, the Church). Such social changes must not be regarded only as hindrances but also as challenges and fresh opportunities for aggiornamento, to which the Second Vatican Council called the Church.
