Use of assistive technology among students with disabilities at the University of Rijeka

Abstract

Students with disabilities represent a vulnerable group within the educational system and the broader society. Ensuring their equality and full integration requires providing access to assistive technology. The aim of this study was to examine the use and accessibility of assistive technology among students with disabilities at the University of Rijeka. The research was conducted in July 2024 via an electronic survey on a sample of 25 students aged 20 to 36 years. Results showed that assistive technology was most frequently used by students with hearing impairments (100%) and visual impairments (83%), while usage among students with physical disabilities was significantly lower (43%). Hypotheses regarding greater accessibility of technology for deaf and visually impaired students compared to students with physical disabilities were rejected, as the differences were not statistically significant (p>0.05). The study confirms that assistive technology significantly contributes to independence and academic success, but barriers related to accessibility and cost of devices still exist. Systematic institutional support and adaptation of the educational process are needed to ensure that all students with disabilities have equal access to education.
