Sažetak

Artistic competitions, called the "Pentagon of the Muses" (painting, sculpture, architecture, literature and music), were part of the Olympic Games from 1912 to 1948. The idea was initiated by Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern games, who wanted to combine sports and art along the lines of the ancient Olympic Games. The competitions were canceled due to problems with amateurism, subjective evaluation and lack of popularity among the audience. In order to maintain a certain level of artistic activity, they were replaced by exhibitions, festivals and performances, and thus art remains an important factor of the Olympic Games today.
