Sažetak

In Croatia, as well as in the world, there has been an increase in the incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes in recent years. It is a well-known fact that nearly 50% of individuals with diabetes do not achieve treatment goals regarding glycemic control, with possible causes including delays in diagnosis and clinical inertia. Treating individuals with type 2 diabetes involves the implementation of non-pharmacological treatment measures and pharmacotherapy. Newer classes of antihyperglycemic agents allow not only for optimal glycemic control but also for cardiovascular and renal protection. The goal of diabetes treatment is not only to achieve good glycoregulation but also to prevent and/or slow down the development of acute and chronic complications of the disease and to improve the quality of life of affected individuals.
