Sažetak
In the context of a significant increase in the number of foreign workers who come to Croatia from culturally more distinctive environments and the increased daily contact of Croatian citizens with people who are portrayed/perceived as “other and different” on racial, cultural and religious grounds, we are witnessing negative changes in attitudes towards migrants. This is contributed to by political and social actors who, in their public statements, increasingly portray migrants and their diversity as a threat to Croatian society. The aim of this paper is to examine whether there have been changes in the attitudes of law students towards migrants and whether the mentioned processes affected the social distance expressed towards different groups of migrants. Survey conducted in 2019 on the attitudes of students at four law faculties in Croatia towards different categories of migrants was repeated in 2024. The analyses showed a statistically significant increase in social distance towards all groups of potential immigrants, except for immigrants from the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Additionally, in 2024, respondents perceive foreign workers as “undesirable” migrants in Croatia. Value orientations have again proven to be the strongest predictors of expressed social distance towards migrants.
