Sažetak
Born in Boljun at the end of the Uskok War (1615-1618), Lovro Kurelić comes from a family that settled in Istria after fleeing Ottoman-ruled Bosnia. His father most likely died in the war, leaving Lovro orphaned, and relying on familial connections, namely his uncle Bernard Velijan, a parish priest from Boljun and his aunt’s brothers-in-law from the Glavinić family. The Franciscan priest Franjo Glavinić, a notable Croatian author and historian, enabled him to receive an education in church circles, which served as a jumping-off point for Kurelić’s career at the Habsburg court. During the 17th century, the Habsburg court was going through the modernization process and educated individuals were becoming more and more important for running administrative tasks, diplomatic missions and ensuring communication across the multinational Empire. With his knowledge of German, Italian, Latin, and Slavic lan-guages, Kurelić made a name for himself in Ferdinand III and his successor Leopold I’ courts. As the Czech herald, he participated in ceremonial and diplomatic events and was a crucial figure for translating and dealing with Russian and Ottoman ambassadors. His skills enabled him to participate in important diplomatic missions as an interpreter and courtier, including the 1655 mission to Moscow, where peace negotiations between Poland and Russia took place. Besides his official court career, Kurelić was hired for lucrative genealogical jobs for noble families throughout the Empire. Among the many well-known family trees he authored are those of the noble Pevereli family, Duke Jacob Kettler of Courland and Semigallia, and the most well-known one of all, the lineage of the Russian Emperor Alexei Romanov I. His unique position as someone close to the Holy Roman Emperor allowed him to be creative in linking clients to mythical and prestigious ancestors, thereby enhancing the reputation of their noble lineage, while at the same time avoiding the wrath of the Habsburgs by not encroaching upon their family myths. Despite his success, however, Kurelić often dealt with late payments, a common occurrence for the Habsburg court officials. His will revealed that he turned to his friends and sponsors to ensure the education of his children because he viewed education as the key to his success thus underscorring the importance of knowledge, effort and belief in oneself as the foundations of his incredible life journey that took him from his humble beginning to a prestigeous and comfortable position at one of Europe’s most powerful courts. Lovro Kurelić’s legacy is found in his works, stored across many European libraries, and in his long-lasting influence on the history of the Habsburg diplomacy and heraldry.
